When do I have to amend my tax return?
You have already filed your tax return, but you realize you made a mistake, what do you do now?
To resolve it, you can submit an amended form to make the correction. However, in some cases, it is not necessary to amend a tax return. It all depends on the types of mistakes you made. Here are instructions on when and how to file an amended tax return:
When should you amend the tax return?
- You omitted income
- You did not claim any deduction, exemption, or credit to which you are entitled
- You are not entitled to any deduction, exemption, or credit claimed in the original return
When should you not amend the tax return?
You should not amend your return if any of the following are incorrect:
- Name or surname
- Social Security number
- Direct Deposit Number
- Date of birth
- Address
To update the address, you must complete the Model Form SC2898. You can access the form on SURI.
For all other cases, you must contact the Department of Treasury at (787) 622-0123 so that they can indicate the process to follow.
There is no deadline to amend the tax return.
Where is an amended tax return filed?
It can be filed electronically using any program or application certified by the Department of Treasury, such as Taxmania. Even if you have filed your tax return with another provider, you can amend your tax return with Taxmania.
To amend your tax return, you must go to your Taxmania profile and choose the tax return you wish to amend from the list. Then, press the "Amend" button on the filed return and follow the instructions.
Does it have a cost to amend the return?
Amending the tax return is free if you paid for filing via Taxmania.
How are tax returns for previous taxable years amended?
If they are tax returns for taxable years 2018 and previous years, you must file on paper and deliver it:
- Personally: In the Department of the Treasury, Intendente Alejandro Ramírez Building in Old San Juan, or in an Internal Revenue Collection Office.

How do I check the status of my amended tax return?
For taxable years 2019 and subsequent years, you can verify the status by accessing your account in SURI.
For previous taxable years, you can contact the Adjustments and Returns Administration Section through 787-721-2020, extensions 2268 and/or 2269, or visit Office 208.
