This 2021 tax year the American Opportunity Credit returns. It is a credit of up to $1,000 per student for reimbursement of education-related expenses. Those who qualify will be college students who are in their first four years of post-secondary education. You can claim the American Opportunity Credit for the tax year 2021 if the student was in school during this year.

Once you apply for the credit and file your 2021 Individuals Form you will need to show as evidence a certification from the educational institution with the student's name on it, a copy of the student's Criminal Record Certificate, and if you received financial aid.
Also, in an appendix, you should list the materials purchased, including receipts for the purchase and an official document from the institution, such as a schedule, where the material is required.
IMPORTANT: The evidence required by the Department of Treasury must be submitted through your SURI account. Once inside your account, select the 2021 Individual Tax Return and in the section of Quisiera, on the upper right-hand side, choose the option to Submit Return Evidence. Then you just have to choose the year and follow the instructions to submit the evidence.
